Peer-reviewed study
7,000 steps a day captures most of the benefit
Daily steps and health outcomes in adults: a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis
Quick answer
What this study found
Ding et al. (2025, Lancet Public Health, PMID 40713949) pooled 57 studies from 35 cohorts. For all-cause mortality, heart disease, dementia and falls, the benefit curved and flattened around 5,000 to 7,000 steps a day. Compared with 2,000 steps, 7,000 steps a day was linked to a 47% lower risk of death from any cause. The authors say 10,000 is still a fine target for active people, but 7,000 is a realistic goal that already brings meaningful benefit.

Honest limits
What this study does not prove.
The studies are observational, so they show an association between steps and lower risk, not proof that steps alone caused it. The authors also note few studies per outcome and no age-specific analysis.
Kris's practical takeaway
Here's what to do with it.
If you are sitting at 2,000 to 4,000 steps, getting to about 7,000 is the move that matters most. Past that, more walking still helps, but you do not need to chase 10,000 to earn the health benefit.
