Step targets differ before and after 60
Daily steps and all-cause mortality: a meta-analysis of 15 international cohorts
Quick answer
What this study found
Paluch et al. (2022, Lancet Public Health, PMID 35247352) combined 15 cohorts covering 47,471 adults. Risk of death kept falling as steps rose until about 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day in adults 60 and older, and 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day in adults under 60. The top quarter (about 10,900 steps) had a 53% lower risk than the bottom quarter (about 3,500 steps).

Kris's practical takeaway
Here's what to do with it.
Under 60, aim for 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day. Over 60, 6,000 to 8,000 already gets most of the benefit. Pick the range for your age and build toward it a week at a time.
