Peer-reviewed study
Everyday movement decides fat gain
Role of nonexercise activity thermogenesis in resistance to fat gain in humans
Quick answer
What this study found
Levine et al. (1999, Science, PMID 9880251) overfed 16 non-obese volunteers by 1,000 calories a day for 8 weeks. Two-thirds of the rise in daily energy burn came from non-exercise activity (NEAT): fidgeting, posture and everyday movement. Differences in NEAT explained a 10-fold difference in how much fat people stored.
